Puttur was formed as 3rd grade Municipality in June,2005 merging two major Panchayats and 6 minor Panchayats. Puttur is famous for the bone setting treatment. The city is developing rapidly owing to its importance as Commercial, Educational centre in the District.

Puttur is the one of fastest developing town in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. As per census, 2001 Puttur has a population around 44,313 and as per census, 2011 Puttur has a Population around 54,141. Puttur has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 84% and Female literacy is 73%.



The world famous Natural Bone Setting Hospital is located in Puttur Municipality. The first Railway Track in Andhra Pradesh was built between Puttur and Renigunta. While laying the railway track, Tamil workers called this place "PUDHU OORU" which means "NEW PLACE". In due course of time, this name was changed to "PUTTURU" by the Telugu people in and around this place.
